What we've done. Not just what we believe.
This was from last year alone. We are always striving to build and improve.

Three commitments. One purpose.
For farming that lasts for your generation and the ones that come after.
Kaitiakitanga - Environment
Guardianship of the natural world - reducing our footprint, supporting regenerative practices, and protecting Aotearoa's land and waterways for generations to come. We’re supporting farmers and growers by offering more sustainable products and recycling services to help reduce environmental impact and improve resource use.
Manaakitanga - Social
Uplifting the wellbeing of our people, our communities, and rural New Zealand - because when people thrive, the land thrives too. From community sponsorships to disaster support, from Fuel for Schools to the next generation of rural leaders, we show up.
Kāwanatanga - Governance
Accountability, transparency and ethical leadership - ensuring Farmlands operates with integrity across every decision we make. 100% NZ owned and operated. Profits reinvested into the co-op and rural communities, not extracted offshore.
How we operate
Sustainability from within
So we’re starting in our own backyard — our stores, our mills, our fleet, our supply chain. Real changes, measured and reported through our FY25 Annual Report, not just talked about. Here’s where we’re at.
We've already taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint and lessen our operational environmental impact. And we're building on that because living our values means more than talking about them.
Toitū carbon reduction — how far have we cut our emissions?
Since 2019 we’ve committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, certified through the Toitū carbon reduce programme. As of FY25 we’ve cut them by 33.82% — real progress toward our targets, independently verified rather than self-graded.
Fleet — lower-emission vehicles on rural roads
Rural never rests, and neither does our fleet. This year we replaced 25% of older vehicles with newer, more efficient models. Hybrids now make up 15% of our light vehicle fleet, and we’re not done yet.
Sustainable sourcing — responsible buying, built into how we operate
Sustainability principles sit inside our corporate procurement policy, so purchasing decisions line up with our environmental and social goals. We don’t yet track supplier emissions — and we won’t pretend otherwise — but we’re actively working with key vendors to bring them alongside our priorities.
Making a real difference (Agrecovery)
98 tonnes of plastic kept out of landfill. And counting.
Agrecovery is one of the most tangible ways your co-op protects the rural backyard. Through our targeted container and small bag recycling programme, Farmlands helps divert agricultural plastic that would otherwise have nowhere good to go.
It’s practical, it’s measurable, and it’s available through your local Farmlands store..
Farmlands FLEX
Energy solutions for rural NZ.
Farmlands FLEX is our energy solutions joint venture — designed to give farmers and growers access to better energy options, reducing costs and supporting a more sustainable energy future for rural New Zealand. Another way the co-op reinvests in what matters to you.
We show up when it matters. Every time.
Sustainability for us isn’t just about what happens on-farm. It’s about the communities that farming supports and the people who make rural New Zealand what it is. That means showing up — with sponsorships, with support programmes, with practical help when things get hard. We can't ask rural New Zealand to think differently about sustainability if we're not doing the same ourselves. Farmlands' internal sustainability strategy embeds environmental, social and governance responsibility into every part of how we run the co-op. We've already taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint and lessen our operational environmental impact. And we're building on that — because living our values means more than talking about them.
Fuel for Schools
Through our partnership with Fern, Farmlands supports Fuel for Schools and puts community value back into the towns and regions our members call home.
215+ Community Sponsorships
Every Farmlands store invests in its local community, sponsoring clubs, events, schools and organisations that matter to the people we serve. Almost $800K returned to rural communities through national sponsorships each year.
Rural Leadership
We're investing in the next generation of rural leaders through the New Zealand Rural Leadership Trust, the Kellogg Programme and Tom Cranswick scholarships. Because it's important to keep capability inside rural communities where it belongs.
Adverse Event Support
When disaster strikes, the co-op doesn’t add to the pressure. Farmlands shareholders in disaster-affected zones receive no penalty interest and no rebate loss — and our Post Your Support coordination helps connect real recovery efforts on the ground. After Cyclone Gabrielle, Starlink units were deployed to impacted stores to restore essential connectivity.
Our accountability, in writing
Read the full story. Every year.
The Farmlands Annual Report is our most comprehensive account of how the co-op is performing financially, operationally, and in terms of our commitments to people and the environment. It's not a marketing document. It's a record of what we said we'd do and what we actually did.
